While they often have good online tutorials, these alternatives don’t have the breadth and depth of free (and pay) tutorials by photographers that you’ll find with Lightroom or Photoshop. Many of these alternative applications have developed good sized user bases, but you might not have anyone teaching them in your area or anyone local you can turn to should you encounter an issue or have a question. What are the best, free alternatives to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop if you’re using a Mac? If you’re just starting out in photography, or don’t have much money to drop on buying software, are there options that do many, or most, of the things Lightroom and Photoshop (or Capture One or On1) do?ĭon't have a Mac but curious about free photo editors for Windows? Check out my article on photo editors for PCs. Double clicking to enlarge the photo gives you access to the tools on the top right. I have my old applications back working perfectly and can live with mail being dodgy.Apple Photos. After that I gave up and restored from time machine back to Mavericks. It appears to have been kernel panics… I think. This culminated in a massive meltdown of the screen into purple haze with lines and artefacts. ? Finally when all appeared well again and the problem files removed, I began having graphics glitches at random. Apparently the problem was with kernel extension files from old apps. The problem persisted, though, so more Terminal fiddling was needed. I was only able to recover it using terminal, thanks to an Apple support discussion. The machine became stuck on the grey start screen with apple logo and empty progress bar. My trouble began when I needed to restart my machine (I rarely do this, so it took me a week or so to notice the problem). I would have to live with that and anyway, Mail was finally fixed!! I suppose they were old programs, if well loved. Bad move! At first all was deceptively good - despite several of my favourite programs no longer functioning (Aperture needed a fussy re-install and then became buggy, Smart Notebook no longer worked, MyHome 3D, another favourite also gone). ![]() I installed over my Mavericks rather than do the clean install because I was feeling reckless and lazy. This is the first time I have actually needed to go backwards again. All filed mail is kept in ~user/Library/Application support/Mail/Mailboxes and most of the settings & preferences are kept in ~user/Library/Application support/Mail/MailData with each actual account kept in an alphanumeric folder ~user/Library/Application support/Mail. Plus allot of files that were in ~user/Library/Application support/Mail no longer used so I moved those into a Temp folder for the time being. Strange thing is that the ~user/library/Preferences/ was not recreated so I do not know where the preference settings are any more. Though my Signatures were still there I just had to re-associate them to the appropriate accounts.ĥ - I also had to restore all my personal Mail Stationery Templates which are located: /Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Apple/Mail/Stationery/Apple/Contents/Resources. NOTE: They will be restored under On My Mac, TimeMachine, I just dragged them out of Time Machine and dropped them under On My Mac as they where before, after they had been restored.ģ - Rebuilt all accounts and filing mailboxes.Ĥ - Went through Preferences and reset-up all by previous settings. (decided I did not need my gmail imap accounts as hadn’t used them in ages)Ģ - Using Time Machine from within mail restored all my ‘Received’ & ‘Sent’ filing mailboxes. It took me close to four hours to research the problem then solve it.ġ - recreated manually all my POP accounts & iCloud account. My own problem was quite major in that I lost ALL my mail accounts, boxes and files. The Apple Discussion forums are full of problems and complaints. All except one person in my family and amongst my friends who upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.0 or 10.11.1 have had problems ranging in severity from minor to unable to reboot. This is the worst Apple Mac OS release EVER. ![]()
